The first rule of bioimage analysis is, you talk about bioimage analysis. The second rule of bioimage analysis is, you TALK about bioimage analysis.

Tyler Durden – paraphrased

Wait, wrong script…

All joking aside, bioimage analysis goes beyond “pretty pictures”. Reproducible research equals good quantitation and there are five principles of image analysis that one should always keep in mind. Image analysis is supposed to be:

  • Quantitative
    • Derive numbers from images which describe physical properties of the observed sample.
  • Objective
    • Derived measurement are independent from who did the measurement, i.e., is free of interpretation.
  • Reliable
    • Confidence, that the measurement is describing what it is supposed to describe.
  • Reproducible
    • Somebody else can do the experiment under different conditions and gets similar measurements.
  • Repeatable
    • The analysis can be repeated twice under the same conditions and one gets similar results.

Actually, these principles of bioimage are principles of scientific experimentation and generally applicable. This is the beauty of good scientific practise.
